RORY MCILROY accused Jordan Spieth of trying to “take me out” in their pre-tournament GolfBoarding battle in Abu Dhabi.
And world No1 Spieth admitted the thought of taking down a player who will be a fierce rival for years to come did cross his mind.
Both men were joking of course.
But they clearly relished the chance to claim the bragging rights before the serious stuff starts when they tee off alongside Rickie Fowler in the HSBC Abu Dhabi Championship.
Spieth revealed their motorised skateboards collided briefly when they tried to swerve through a couple of flags in the fairway at Saadiyat Golf Club, while trying to catch up to playing partners Fowler and Henrik Stenson.
He explained: “Well, Rory’s one very good player that I could have taken out of the field!
“We were instructed to go through a pretty narrow gap and there was four of us on the GolfBoards.
“So Rickie and Henrik were out front and Rory and I were kind of going this way together and I kind of slowed down and bumped the back of his board. Fortunately his ankles stayed on the board, so that was nice.
“It was really good fun. It was billed as a ‘Rider Cup’ challenge, and it was nice for us Americans to get the drop on the Europeans for a change.
